Mumbai, Nov 26 (UNI) On the seventeenth anniversary of the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, French Ambassador to India Thierry Mathou paid tribute to the victims and reaffirmed France’s commitment to standing alongside India in the fight against terrorism.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, he said, "Mumbai Attacks 26/11: As we mark 17 years since these horrific attacks, France honours the memory of the victims. France reaffirms its unequivocal condemnation of terrorism and stands united with India in combating this scourge."
The anniversary commemorates the brutal attacks carried out by ten terrorists from the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba group, who infiltrated Mumbai by sea on the night of November 26, 2008.
Over the course of four days, the attackers targeted multiple locations, including the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Oberoi Trident Hotel, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus railway station, Nariman House, Cama Hospital, Metro Cinema, and Leopold Cafe. The attack resulted in 166 fatalities and more than 300 injuries.
Physical remnants of the tragedy can still be seen in parts of south Mumbai, such as the bullet marks at Leopold Cafe and Nariman House. A bust of Assistant Sub-Inspector Tukaram Omble, who was killed while capturing the lone surviving attacker, Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab, stands as a tribute to the bravery of the police.
Nine of the attackers were killed during security operations, while Kasab was arrested, sentenced to death in 2010, and ultimately executed in 2012 in Pune’s high-security prison.
