New Delhi, Dec 18 (UNI) Both the houses of Parliament were adjourned for the day on Wednesday, after the Opposition benches created uproar over Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on B R Ambedkar during his reply on the Constitution debate in Rajya Sabha yesterday.

As soon as the Lok Sabha reconvened at 2 pm, members of the Opposition trooped into the Well of the House raising slogans, “Jai Bhim” and “Amit Shah maafi maango” and disrupted the proceedings of the House.

Amid the ruckus, presiding officer P C Mohan called for the papers to be laid on the table.

After the papers were laid on the table, the Chair then adjourned the lower house for the day to meet on Thursday ie December 19th, 2024 at 11 am.

Earlier when the House met for the day, Opposition parties, including Congress, DMK and Left, started sloganeering against the remarks of Shah.

They trooped into the well of the House. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Arjun Ram Meghwal and other members of the Treasury benches objected to the conduct of the Opposition. Meghwal alleged that Congress has always insulted Dr Ambedkar and Congress give respect to Dr Ambedkar only due to political compulsion. Amid din, Speaker Om Birla adjourned the House till 2 PM.

Meanwhile, similar scenes were witnessed in the Rajya Sabha, which witnessed two adjournments one till 2 pm and the last one for the day.

Members from Congress, DMK, RJD, AAP and others began sloganeering over the remarks of the Union Home Minister.

Defending Shah’s remark, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said, “Yesterday, Amit Shah clearly showed our sense of reverence in his speech.

He (Amit Shah) said how Congress insulted Ambedkar ji when he was alive...The Congress party did not award him with Bharat Ratna for so many years and along with that, the Congress party insulted Baba Saheb and defeated him in 1952 in an election under a conspiracy."

"I am a Buddhist and a person who follows the path shown by Baba Saheb. In this country, Baba Saheb resigned from the post of Law Minister in 1951. After 71 years, PM Narendra Modi made me, who is a Buddist, the Law Minister of the country," Rijiju said.

Amid pandemonium, the Chairman adjourned the House till 2 PM.

When the Upper House re-assembled at 2 pm, Congress members Pramod Tiwari while raising the issue of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar, said that the Home Minister Amit Shah yesterday insulted Baba Saheb Ambedkar.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju then stood up and said that the Home Minister has only said in the House that Congress always insulted Baba Saheb. He said that the Opposition was trying to mislead the country by showing only ten seconds of the Home Minister's speech.

He said that the Home Minister had said in the House that Congress defeated Baba Saheb in the elections by repeatedly conspiring. It is the Congress that should apologize to the country for insulting Baba Saheb.

Rijiju said that Modi government is taking many steps to preserve the legacy of Baba Saheb.

Amid the ruckus, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said that the Congress was not raising any new issue. He said that the way Amit Shah mockingly said that Congress would have been better off if it had taken the name of God as many times as Ambedkar.

Objecting to this, Rijiju said that the Leader of Opposition was once again misleading the House.

After this, there was noisy scenes both from the treasury and Opposition benches. Thereafter, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar adjourned the House for the day to meet 11 am on Thursday, (December 19, 2024).
