Kolkata, Sep 14 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday made a surprise visit to the protesting junior doctors site at Swasthya Bhavan in Salt Lake here and appealed them to resume duty.

The doctors have been protesting over the rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

'The Chief Minister assured the doctors to give her time to look into their demands and take action if anyone was found guilty.'

'She said it was her last attempt to appeal the doctors to return to work and assured them that no action will be taken against them.'

Mamata said 'the doctors' demands has to be studied in detail and take action appropriately if anyone was found guilty.'

However, the junior doctors told reporters that they would return to work immediately after their five demands were conceded by the government.

"We are not giving up our five points, including justice for the lady medic who was raped and murdered on August 9, arrest of those involved invandalism of the hospital in the early of hours of August 15, and resignation of the city police commissioner, state health secretary and his two deputies," Dr Aniket Mahato said.

The doctors demanded immediate talks with the Chief Minister with live streaming to settle the issue for which they were demanding for the past one month.

Banerjee, who was greeted with " we demand justice, we demand justice from the junior doctors,' said she came here not as a CM but as your "didi".

"I came to meet you as your 'didi' not as the Chief Minister. I assure you that I will study your demands and take action if someone is found guilty," Mamata said and appealed to the protesting doctors to resume work. She also announced the dissolution of patient welfare committees in all state-run hospitals with immediate effect.

The Chief Minister said from now on the principals of the medical colleges would be the chairperson and members will be taken from the doctors both junior and senior, nurses, one public representative and the police.

She also reminded the junior medics that she would not take any action against the doctors since the next hearing in the Supreme Court is on next Tuesday.

"We are not like UP where the government there had banned protests for six months," Banerjee said.

She told the students to seek justice from the CBI. Mamata said the CBI should complete the investigation within 3 months and hang the culprits.

"This is my last attempt to resolve the crisis," Banerjee said after her nearly 15 minutes address. As she was leaving the protest site the junior doctors again shouted slogans " we demand justice, we demand justice".

The junior medics have been protesting near Swasthya Bhawan at Salt Lake , the headquarters of the state Health Department, since Tuesday with a host of demands, including better security at state-run hospitals and the removal of top officials over the rape and murder of the doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
