PM Modi to join 22nd ASEAN-India Summit virtually, reinforcing India’s strategic ties with Southeast Asia

New Delhi, Oct 23 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to virtually participate in the 22nd ASEAN-India Summit on October 26, responding to an invitation from Malaysian Prime Minister Dato Seri’ Anwar Ibrahim, the Ministry of External Affairs announced today.
This summit represents a significant step forward in strengthening India’s relationship with Southeast Asia, in line with the government’s Act East Policy and broader Indo-Pacific vision.
The MEA statement highlighted that, “Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and the ASEAN leaders will jointly review the progress in ASEAN-India relations and discuss initiatives for strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.” India’s engagement with ASEAN continues to be a vital element of its foreign policy, focused on promoting regional peace, economic resilience, and inclusive development.
Earlier today, PM Modi took to his official X handle to share warm sentiments about his conversation with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. “Had a warm conversation with my dear friend, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia. Congratulated him on Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship and conveyed best wishes for the success of the upcoming Summit,” Modi wrote.
“I look forward to joining the ASEAN-India Summit virtually, and to further deepening of the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.” The leaders also discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, technology, education, and security, reflecting the robust ties between India and Malaysia. Following the ASEAN-India Summit, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will represent India at the 20th East Asia Summit in Kuala Lumpur on October 27.
This platform will provide an opportunity to discuss pressing issues related to peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region, along with broader regional and global developments.
The ASEAN Summit, taking place from October 26 to 28, will also feature the ceremonial handover of the ASEAN Chairmanship from Malaysia to the Philippines.
Malaysia’s leadership this year has been marked by concerted efforts to boost regional cooperation and economic growth.
India’s steadily deepening partnership with ASEAN is a cornerstone of its strategic outreach in Southeast Asia. By expanding collaboration across multiple sectors, India and ASEAN are working towards a shared vision of economic progress and security amid a fast-changing geopolitical environment.
