Sitharaman engages with economists, agriculturists in pre-Budget consultations

New Delhi, Nov 10 (UNI) union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman chaired two crucial pre-Budget consultation meetings in New Delhi on Monday, engaging with leading economists and representatives from farmer associations and agriculture economists ahead of the union Budget 2026-27.
"Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman chairs the first Pre-Budget Consultation with leading economists in connection with the upcoming union Budget 2026-27, in New Delhi, today," the Ministry of Finance said in a social media post.
The meeting was attended by the Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, and Chief Economic Adviser, Government of India, besides senior officers from the DEA.
In her second meeting, Sitharaman interacted with representatives from farmer associations and agriculture economists, focusing on agricultural growth and farmer welfare. "Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs Sitharaman chairs the second Pre-Budget Consultation meeting with representatives from Farmer Associations and Agriculture Economists ahead of the forthcoming General Budget 2026-27 today," the Ministry added.
These consultations are part of the government's efforts to gather diverse perspectives and suggestions from various stakeholders, including industry associations, trade unions, economists, and social sector representatives, to ensure the union Budget reflects the needs of different sectors.
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has urged the government to adopt comprehensive tax reforms, simplify the TDS regime, and digitize customs systems. "The tax system must ensure that taxation not only raises revenue efficiently but also acts as a catalyst for investment, innovation, and competitiveness," CII Director-General Chandrajit Banerjee reportedly said.
The union Budget 2026-27 is expected to be presented on February 1, 2026.
