Palakkad, Jan 22 (UNI) A rogue wild male elephant code named as Palakkad Tusker (PT-7), which created panic and fear for the last seven months at Dhoni and nearby villages, was tranquilized in a mission by a 72 member forest Rapid Response Team (RRT) from Mundur forest area on Sunday.
According to forest officials, the RRT members spotted the tusker around 0600 hrs at Mundur dense forest and gave close range tranquilize shots by Chief forest Veterinary Surgeon Arun Zachria around 0715 hrs.
The shot was hit on the back side of the left ear of the elephant. Around 1130 hrs, the elephant was shifted in a half sedated stage into a lorry with the support of three Kumki elephants and then provided top up sedation and shifted to the Dhoni forest office compound.
Around 1300 hrs, the tusker was caged inside a specially made cage with trees at the Dhoni forest office compound.
Dr Arun Zachira said "now the health condition of jumpo is stable and we will give anti sedation medicines soon to recover".
The elephant will be trained as a Kumki elephant, he said. For this purpose, training with a mahout will be started after one month when the jumpo comes into control inside the cage.
The PT-7 had killed one Sivaraman of Dhoni on July 8, 2022 while he was on a morning walk along with his friends and the jumpo also damaged agricultural crops at Dhoni and Akathethara areas in the district. Following these incidents, political parties demanded that the elephant be captured and also organized local hartals in this regard.
It was on January 9, a tuskless male elephant code named as Pandalur Makhana (PM-2) was tranquilised by RRT forest officials from Kuppadi forest area and caged at Muthanga forest near Sulthan Bathery.
Meanwhile, Kerala Forest Minister A K Saseendran said that the elephant is renamed as "Dhoni".
