Young men pull injured deer to safety in Karnataka

Mysuru, June 27 (UNI) What could have ended in tragedy turned into a story of compassion after a group of young men in Karnataka's Mysuru district risked their safety to rescue an injured deer that had been mauled by stray dogs and trapped in a well.
The incident occurred in Hedatale village of Nanjangud taluk on Saturday when the frightened deer, which had wandered out of the nearby forest into agricultural fields, was chased by a pack of stray dogs. Desperate to escape, the animal sustained bite injuries to its eyes, head, neck and abdomen before plunging into an open well.
Hearing its cries and seeing the dogs surrounding the well, the young men rushed to the spot armed with sticks and stones. They chased away the dogs and carefully pulled the exhausted and injured deer to safety.
Without wasting time, the rescuers alerted officials of the Nanjangud Forest Range. Forest Department personnel arrived shortly thereafter, administered first aid and shifted the deer to a treatment centre, where it is receiving further care.
Villagers said deer frequently stray into nearby farmlands from the adjoining forest in search of food and water, but are increasingly falling prey to stray dog attacks.
The villagers hailed the youngsters for their swift and selfless act, saying their timely intervention gave the helpless animal a second chance at life.
