A devout follower of Lord Krishna, Meerabai was a Rajput princess. There is a controversy regarding Meerabai’s birth. But it is accepted that she was born in the Vikram Era year 1561 or 1504 AD at Chaukari village in the Merta District of Rajasthan. Located in Rajasthan’s Nagaur district, Merta is a small town in Marwar ruled by the Rathors, great devotees of Vishnu. Meerabai was lived in Merta from 1498 to 1547. Her father, Ratan Singh, was the second son of Rao Duda ji. Meera was the great-granddaughter of Rao Jodha Ji Rathor, the founder of Jodhpur.
World-renowned Lord Shri Charbhujanath and Meerabai Temple in Merta is the temple where Meerabai worshipped Lord Krishna before her marriage to Prince Bhoj of Chittor. The 400-year-old Temple is also known as Meera Temple of Merta. The Meerabai temple and monument are adjacent to each other and are in the heart of the old town. Passing through the very narrow streets one can find sweets, flowers, and other small merchant shops on both sides of the streets. The Meerabai temple and Monument are right opposite the famous clock tower of the city.
The beautiful architecture, black and white marble flooring and the multi-colour mirror carvings inside the temple attract people to visit there. The fascinating and life-size statue of Meerabai inside the temple is the main attraction point. In a standing position with Ektaara(musical instrument with a string) in her hand the eyes of the Meera statue give an illusion that the statue is beholding the Lord Shri Charbhujanath statue which is 120 feet from it. This way the architect has shown the devotion of Meerabai towards Lord Krishna through his unique art form. Behind the Meera statue, a painting of Lord Krishna playing flute gives a feel of divinity. In the temple, the Parikrama marg or walking path is also decorated with mirror work.
Beautifully crafted statues of Lord Hanuman and Garuda dev, the Vahan of Lord Vishnu, and Krishna are also placed in the glass boxes inside the temple premises. Also, in the temple are Meerabai's cousins Jayamal, uncle Veeramaji and idols of Surya Dev and Dharma Raj. It is believed that from a young age, Meerabai had a great fascination for Lord Krishna and considered him as herhusband. However, Meera got married to Rana Sanga’s elder son Prince Bhojraj of Chittorgarh in the Vikram Era year 1573. Kunwar Bhojraj died after some years and Vikramadityabecame the king of Mewar. He tortured Meera and tried tactics on her, thinking that she would leave the path of devotion for Krishna. But all his efforts got wasted. Even then, Meerabai wrote many poems and songs and was always inclined towards Lord Krishna. She led her entire life as a real disciple and devotee of Lord Krishna and eventually left her marital home to lead the life of a wanderer. She migrated to Vrindavan passing through Pushkar, Dacorji in Gujarat. Eventually, Meera reached to Dwarka and fused herself into the idol of Lord Dwarkadhish with her own body. Meerabai’s fame spread far and wide. Meerabai is today considered as the soul divine of devotion andsanctity. The devotional poems written by Meerabai dedicated to Krishna are still talked about and studied by scholars.
In the end, I can say that the temple is a perfect example of eternal devotion and holiness.
