Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U), a flagship mission of the Government of India being implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), was launched on the 25th June 2015. The Mission addresses urban housing shortage among the Economical Weaker Section/Low- and Middle-Income Group categories including the slum dwellers by ensuring a pucca house to all eligible urban households by the year 2022, when the Nation completes 75 years of its Independence. All houses under PMAY(U) have basic amenities like a toilet, water supply, electricity, and kitchen. The Mission promotes women empowerment by providing the ownership of houses in name of female members or joint names. Preference is also given to differently-abled persons, senior citizens, SCs, STs, OBCs, minority, single women, transgender, and other weaker & vulnerable sections of the society. A PMAY(U) house ensures dignified living along with a sense of security and pride of ownership to the beneficiaries.
Under the scheme it has been claimed that 114.02 lakh houses have been sanctioned, 91.41 lakh houses grounded, 53.37 lakh houses completed so far and rupees 7.52 lakh crore have invested up to now.
But if we see the ground reality of the scheme, people are still waiting for their installment amount and a few are in the queue to get their houses under the scheme. Officers concerned with the scheme are not listening to their grievances. In this vein, Ummed Hassan from Charthawal in Muzaffarnagar painfully stated, “I am in desperate need of the installment amount from last 11 months but still I have not received the amount in my account.” Similarly, to remove the scarcity of water Pradhan Mantri Har Ghar Jal Yojana 2022 was initiated in 2019 with a budget of 3.5 lakh crore rupees under the Jal Jeevan mission. Under the scheme, PM Modi has assured water facility and tap connection to every household by 2024. Through this scheme, the central government has allotted rupees 10,870/- crore to the UP Government which is one of the highest amounts given to any state.
As per the statistical data, since the launch of the Mission, i.e., in August 2019, households provided with tap water connection are 5,52,95,256 (28.72%). Households with tap water connections as on 15 Aug 2019 were 3,23,62,838 (16.81%). Households with tap water connections in 2022 are 8,76,58,094 (45.54%)
Likewise, in a state like Rajasthan households provided with tap water connection since the launch of the Mission, i.e., in August 2019 are 10,47,315 (10.32%). Households with tap water connections as of 15 Aug 2019 were 11,74,131 (11.57%). So, the total connections provided in 2022 are 22,21,446 (21.90%).
